Originally known as charge cards, credit cards first appeared during 1920s in the United States, but were mainly used as a means to sell fuel to automobile owners. However, it was not only until 1958 that the credit card was actually used as a means to pay for products and services and it was only in the 1970s that the magnetic strip was used for credit cards. The magnetic strip on the card stores data and is read by swiping across a reading head. This swiping process allows information to be transmitted through the telephone line after which the cardholder’s bank authorizes the transaction. A Swipe Credit Card machine allows a sales transaction to be processed immediately and efficiently. With today’s very busy society where people have been using money less often and credit cards more, especially for transactions involving large amounts. We can expect more advancements with regards to the use of credit cards and their ability to make retail sales faster and more convenient.
